The Grape
Creu de Lavit (CRU-deh-la-VEET) is made exclusively from Xarel-lo (sha-REL-o), a native Penedés varietal and one of the white grapes used in the production of cava. Xarel-lo yields an aromatic wine with good body and medium acidity. Creu de Lavit uses all hand-harvested, estate-grown grapes from 30 - 45 year old vines.
The Blend
100% Xarel-lo
Tasting Notes
Star bright straw yellow, with hints of green. Aromas of pineapples and ripe pears coupled with white carnations, over a base of cinnamon and smoke from the subtle use of oak. It is soft and full of flavor on the palate, following a crisp entry. The fruit is beautifully balanced with the flavors of fermentation in fine oak, giving this lovely wine a great individuality.
Food Affinities
The brisk acidity of this vintage makes this an excellent aperitif wine or serve with a spicy southeastern Asian dish, such as grilled chicken with Thai chili sauce. It would also match well with mussels or clams, steamed in a garlic broth, or served after or before dinner with your favorite blue cheese, perhaps a Cabrales from Spain.
Wine Ratings & Reviews
Segura Viudas Creu de Lavit 2005
"This is a feathery picnic basket wine, with airy fresh hay and lemon grass up front, followed by ripe, sappy, resinous, oily, fusel-oil-textured Fuji apple. There's just a hint of nuttiness in there from the light hand with French and American oak that gives this wine a hint of complexity that you might not expect."
- Richard Paul Hinkle, "New and Interesting from Spain", Quarterly Review of Wines, Summer 2008
"...is a charmer with vibrant acidity and apple fruit."
